LYNN AND ANNE ON COURSE TO MEET
IN CENTENARY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Lynn Kenny and Anne Laing, pre-tournament favourites for the Centenary Scottish women's amateur golf championship, are on course to meet in Friday morning's final over the Old Course at St Andrews.
They tied at the top of the field of 132 with six-under-par totals of 146 in the qualifying rounds to decide the 32 players who will go on to the sudden-death match-play.
Kenny birdied the last hole for a second-round 73, one fewer than Laing's score and that earned Lynn the top seed placing in the draw. As Nos 1 and 2 qualifiers, they go into opposite halves of the draw.
Dawn Dewar qualified for the match-play after a 74 for 156 but she is due to sit a Higher examination at 1pm on Thursday and thought it better to pull out now rather than wait until she saw if she made further progress in the championship.
The youngest of the qualifiers by far was 14-year-old local St Andrews girl Krystle Caithness who shot a 76 for 159. This is her debut in the championship.
In the play-off for the last of the 32 match-play places, Scots and Irish seniors champion Pam Williamson beat Donna Jackson at the first extra hole. They had tied on 166.
Slow play was not so big a problem as it had been on the opening day, thanks to the work of the St Andrews Links Trust rangers who had performed only an observing role on Monday. The last trio to finish took around 4 1/2hr, still a long time but over an hour faster than the corresponding threesome on Monday evening.
