VIKKI BOOKS HER PLACE IN
MATCH-PLAY STAGES
Curtis Cup player Vikki Laing shaved five shots off her opening effort with a par-equalling 73 in the second qualifying round of the British women's open amateur championship at Lindrick today.
With a 36-hole total of 151, the 22-year-old from Musselburgh was a certainty to figure among the leading 64 who would go forward at the end of the day to the match-play stages.
"I've used my driver only once since I arrived here. I'm using a three-wood off the tee to make sure I stay out of the trees," said Vikki who birdied the fifth and eighth to be out in two-under-par 34.
" I missed three greens after the turn, the 10th, the 11th and 16th and bogeyed each of them because I couldn't get up and down."
Miss Laing, who has enlisted the services of Welshman Ernie Brown, one of the most experienced caddies at the highest level in women's amateur golf, did get a third birdie, at the 13th, in an inward 39.
Nuria Clau from Barcelona posted the clubhouse target of level par 146 with a 72 which included an eagle 2 at the 315yd eighth where she holed out with a nine-iron from 120yd.
Germany's Anja Monke shot the lowest round of the tournament so far, a three-under-par 70, to join the Spaniard in the lead.
Anja could have had the pole position on her own after four birdies put her at one under par overall but she had her solitary bogey at the 17th for 36 home and a 70 for 146.
