IRISH WOMEN'S OPEN AMATEUR STROKE-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
LOUISE IS LEADING SCOT AS CLARE
COUGHLAN LOOKS SET FOR IRISH WIN
CLAIRE Coughlan from Cork has never won the Irish women's open amateur stroke-play championship - sponsored this year by Suzuki - but she is odds-on favourite to put her name on the trophy on Sunday when she carries a three-stroke lead into the third and final round at Rathsallagh Golf Club at Dunlavin, County Wicklow.
Three years ago, the diminutive Claire was runner-up to Rebecca Coakley who also won last year and is not defending because she is now a rookie professional.
Miss Coughlan, who was Irish girls champion in 1999 and a member of the Ireland team who beat Scotland in the European women's team championship at Frankfurt recently, said after returning scores of 72 and 69 for a 36-hole total of 141, five under par for the 5,778yd parkland lay-out: "I am very happy with my scores today. I love the course."
She had six birdies in her 69 which put daylight between her and the international field. She had halves of 36 (par) and 33 (four under), birdieing the first, the eighth (10ft), the 13th (15ft), the 14th (wedge to 1ft), the 15th (12ft) and the 16th (pitch and putt).
Miss Coughlan's nearest challenger is fellow international Maura Morrin (The Curragh) who also played against Scotland. She is on 144 after scores of 74 and 70.
Louise Kenney from Pitreavie, Dunfermline is the leading Scot in fifth place overnight on 151 after rounds of 77 and 74.
Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) and Pamela Feggans (Doon Valley) are joint eighth on 155.
Cara Gruber (Stirling University) is back on 157 with Laura Wells on 161 after improving nine shots in the afternoon with a 75.
Claire Hargan is still searching for the form that carried her to the final of the Centenary Scottish women's championship over the Old Course, St Andrews in May. She is down the field on 164 (84 and 80).
Cruden Bay's Lyndsey Devenish retired during the first round.
