JENNA AND HEATHER SHARE KILMACOLM
LEAD AFTER 36 HOLES
WITH two holes to play, Jenna Wilson was three strokes clear of the field in the second round of the BP Scottish Under-21 girls' open stroke-play golf championship at a very wet Kilmacolm Golf Club on Tuesday.
A lost-ball double bogey 5 at the 17th and a bogey 5 at the last where she overclubbed her approach wiped out the 19-year-old Strathaven player's advantage and she will start today's (Wed) final round sharing the pole position with playing partner Heather MacRae (Dunblane) on level par 144.
Coincidentally, they are both going to San Diego State University on golf scholarships next month.
"I was going very well until that finish," said Jenna. "I had birdied the first, seventh, 13th, 14th and 16th and was still two under par on the 17th tee."
Jenna's rounds for the day were 71 and 73 while Heather had 73 and 71 for 144.
Heather is one of a clutch of new young caps in the Scotland team for the women's home internationals at Cruden Bay in September. Jenna is not - which may act as a spur over the final 18 holes to prove some sort of point to the selection committee.
"I had heaps of putts in the morning but I was a lot steadier in the second round. If I can get my putter working, there's no reason why I can't win the title," said Heather (19), the 2001 BP Scottish girls match-play champion and a winner on the American college circuit earlier this year when she was at McLennan College, Texas.
It is by no means a two-horse race at Kilmacolm because Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), another past Scottish girls' match-play champion who is home for the summer holidays from Iowa State University, is only one shot off the pace after scores of 74 and 71 for 145. Louise is one of the new caps in the Scotland women's team.
Lesley Hendry (Routenburn), who has failed to gain selection for the Scotland girls' team, is lying in fourth place on 146.
Defending champion Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) has a six-shot deficit make up after rounds of 78 and 72 for 150.
+Alison Mitchell, a 17-year-old Ranfurly Castle player, was taken by SLGA officials to Inverclyde Royal Infirmary after she slipped down a bank at the fifth hole and fell heavily on her left ankle. X-Rays revealed no broken bones but damaged tissues will keep her off any golf course until they heal.
