ENGLISH youngsters dominated the leading positions in the Grand Final of the PGA Wee Wonders Open Golf championship, staged in association with the Golf Foundation, over the Balgove Course, St Andrews
The four boys' age groups were all won by competitors from England. Three of the four girls' age categories were also won by English entrants.
The odd girl out was Lesley Atkins from Minto Golf Club, near Hawick. Lesley won the 7 and 8 years' section in a close finish with Aimee Wilson from Branston, Staffordshire. Both used their allotted 36 shots to get as far as the ninth green. Lesley was closer to the hole.
Eight-year-old Ewan Scott, one of the two locals among the 72 qualifiers for the Grand Final, lost out in a "photo finish" for first place in the boys' seven to eight years' category. Both he and Aaron Rai from Wolverhampton holed out on the 10th green with their 36th shot. Aaron won the tie-breaker.
Lauren Whyte (7), the other St Andrews competitor, finished sixth in her age group.
The Grand Final was the culmination of six months of qualifying rounds and nine regional finals in Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.
Started in 1995 by Alasdair Good, now head professional at Gullane, the PGA Wee Wonders tournament has grown into the biggest golfing event in Great Britain & Ireland for children from the ages of five up to 12 years.
"We are thrilled to support this event which promotes golf at its grassroots level," said Sandy Jones, chief executive of the PGA.
