SCOTTISH WOMEN'S COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
NORTHERN COUNTIES SWEEP TO SCOTTISH TITLE
NORTHERN Counties completed a clean sweep of the opposition with a 7 1/2-1 1/2 victory over Borders to win the Scottish women's county golf championship with something to spare at Scotscraig Golf Club, Tayport on Sunday
The Highland lasses, sponsored by Gleaner Oils, were on course to regain the title they last won at Alyth in 2000 when they opened the three-day programme with a 5-4 win over joint favourites Fife after losing the foursomes 2-1.
That was the key match of the tournament. Northern Counties went on to beat Ayrshire 7 1/2-1 1/2 on Saturday and a third and final victory was never in doubt.
"We had a very good mixture of experience and new blood," said skipper Anne Ryan. "Five of the team who won the title for Northern Counties three years ago were still available and that made a big difference. We had strength in depth."
Most successful players for Northern Counties, who were sponsored by Gleaner Oils, were international Lesley Mackay (Stirling University & Royal Dornoch) and Jenny Milne (Elgin), both of whom gained 4 1/2pt out of six.
Fife finished runners-up with wins over Borders (7 1/2-1 1/2) on Saturday and Ayrshire (7 1/2-1 1/2) yesterday.
Fife had the player of the tournament in former Scottish champion Elaine Moffat who won all six of her ties. Team-mate Jocelyn Carthew ran her close with five wins out of six.
Borders came third while Ayrshire, who were unable to field the line-up that won the West Division title for the first time in more than 30 years earlier in the season, were wooden spoonists.
