SCOTTISH WOMEN'S COUNTY FINALS DAY ONE
GOOD START BY NORTHERN COUNTIES, BORDERS
Ayrshire's first appearance in the Scottish women's county golf championship finals for more than 30 years began on a low note at Scotscraig, Tayport where they were defeated 5-4 by Borders who have never won the title.
In the match between the two most fancied teams of the four divisional champions, Northern Counties rallied from a 2-1 reverse in the foursomes to beat the host county Fife 5-4.
Borders, regular qualifiers for the finals but also regular wooden spoonists, established a 2-1 lead in the foursomes with good wins by Martine Pow & Sheila Cuthbertson and by Judith Anderson & Liz Campbell.
Pow, Cuthbertson and Anderson continued in fine form by winning their singles ties for Borders.
Krystle Caithness (14) from St Andrews marked her county debut for Fife by partnering Jocelyn Carthew to a 4 and 3 morning victory but Northern Counties came into their own in the singles, with wins by international player Lesley Mackay, Cara Gruber, Jenny Milne and Pat McLennan.
