CLAIRE HUNTER AND PAM MACKAY FAIL TO SURVIVE
STAGE 1 OF LET QUALIFYING SCHOOL IN PORTUGAL
Aberdonian Claire Hunter faces a bleak future as a professional golfer after failing to survive the 36-hole cut in the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 eliminator over the Aroeira 2 course near Lisbon on Wednesday.
The top 56 players in the field of 85 with two-round totals of 12-over-par 156 or better qualified for the Stage 1 72-hole tournament which starts over the same course when 34 exempt players, including Aboyne exile Pam Wright, join the fray for the action which will decide who wins players' cards for next year's Euro circuit.
Claire, 25, who did not get past the halfway cut in any of the LET events she managed to get into in her rookie pro season last year, missed out by a single shot with a second-round 80 for a total of 157.
Although her father Gary has raised a lot of money from am-ams over the past two years to finance his daughter's tour pro aspirations, you cannot buy a player's card for any circuit. You have to earn your place through sheer golfing ability and, sadly, Claire has lost the touch that made her one of the brightest young amateur prospects in Scotland a few years back when she was a girl international and won the North of Scotland and Aberdeenshire women's championships.
Miss Hunter had double bogey 6s at the sixth and 10th and not a single birdie in halves of 40
Pam Mackay, 24, from Golspie fared even worse than Claire in Portugal but at least she has retained her amateur status and can go back to being a full-time professional caddie at Royal Dornoch.
Pam Mackay had a nightmare round of 14-over-par 88 for a 24-over-par total of 168.
Pam, with her Scotland amateur international sister Lesley as her caddie, had a horrific start over the treelined course - double bogey 6, triple bogey 8, triple bogey 7. She had two further double bogeys in halves of 47 (nine over par) and 41 (five over).
Miss Mackay, a former Scotland junior international and winner of the American junior colleges' title during her two years in the States, was clearly unable to play anywhere near her true capabilities. Whether it was nerves or there was another explanation only Pam has the answer.
Fame More from Chesterfield, a member of the Great Britain & Ireland winning team in this year's Vagliano Trophy match, also saw her pro career aspirations blighted by failure to qualify. She had rounds of 81 and 80 for 161. Miss More has retained her amateur status and the way is clear for her now to bid for a place in the GB&I Curtis Cup team to play the United States at Formby in June.
Vagliano Trophy team-mate Becky Brewerton from Abergele, Wales did however qualify for Stage 1 with scores of 76 and 73 for 149.
