LGU AMATEURS TAKE FOURSOMES LEAD
The Ladies Golf Union Elite Squad of amateurs led the Ladies European Tour team of professionals 4 1/2-3 1/2 at the end of the morning foursomes in the Weetabix Challenge match at Formby Golf Club, Merseyside.
That means that Curtis Cup skipper Ada O'Sullivan's bold pre-match prediction that it "would be a different story this year" was spot on.
In last year's Weetabix match at Royal Birkdale, the amateurs won only 4 1/2pt all day long and were hammered by a 12pt margin by their professional opponents.
Ada - whose team of eight for the Curtis Cup match against the United States at the same venue on June 12-13 will be chosen by the LGU selectors on Sunday morning - based her confident outlook on the series of toughening-up matches the lady amateurs have played against county-level male opposition in recent weeks.
The LGU morning winners were Shelley McKevitt and Emma Duggleby, Sarah Jones and Anna Highgate, Lynn Kenny and Kerry Smith, and Sophie Walker and Martina Gillen.
Tricia Mangan and Fame More gained half a point for the amateurs in a square match which would have been another win for the LGU girls but for a 12ft birdie putt holed by Nicola Moult on the last green to wipe out the amateurs' one-hole lead.
