WEETABIX CHALLENGE UPDATE
LGU AMATEURS WIN FIRST OF EIGHT FOURSOMES
The Ladies Golf Union Elite Squad drew first blood in the Weetabix Challenge match on a glorious, sunny morning at Formby Golf Club, hosts to the Curtis Cup match on June 12 and 13.
In the first of the eight foursomes ties to finish, amateurs Shelley McKevitt and Emma Duggleby beat professionals Alison Munt and Sarah Heat by 4 and 3 after going 3 up after eight holes.
In the fourth match, the Welsh amateur pairing of Sarah Jones and Anna Highgate were four up with four to play on Wendy Dicks and Martina Eberl.
There were 16 singles ties to be played in the afternoon.
The amateurs have not won the match since 1998 and were well beaten 16 1/2-4 1/2 at Royal Birkdale 12 months ago.
The early signs were that Curtis Cup skipper Ada O'Sullivan's pre-match prediction that it would be a "different story this year" was on the mark.
