PERTH AND KINROSS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
ROSEANNE WINS THE BATTLE OF THE WEE WONDERS
Roseanne Niven, 15-year-old Crieff player, won the "dream final" in the Perth & Kinross women's county golf championship at Alyth Golf Club on Sunday.
The leading qualifier, Roseanne won the battle of the "wee giants" by 5 and 4 over 11-year-old Carly Booth, No 2 qualifier from Auchterarder and, like Roseanne, one of the best young female golf prospects in the country.
In this morning semi-finals, Carly's debut appearance in the championship looked to be all but over when she was one down on the 18th tee in her semi-final against Jillian Milne (Craigie Hill).
But Carly sank a long putt for a birdie to win the hole and square the match. Then she won the 19th to join Roseanne in the final.
Miss Niven had earlier beaten the 1997 and 2003 champion, Nicki Harding (Craigie Hill) by one hole in the other semi-final, thus avenging last year's defeat in the final.
The final was a battle of birdies with Carly for once being outgunned. When the memorable match finished on the 14th green, new champion Roseanne was three under par and the better ball of the two little players with big golfing futures was six under par.
The handicap championship was won by Jane Taylor, a 16-handicap Strathmore Golf Centre player, who beat Cath Irving (Blairgowrie), who plays off 12, by one hole.
