SCOTTISH WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
BIG SWEAT FOR BORDERLINE QUEEN
Curtis Cup team reserve Clare Queen improved by eight shots in the second round of the Scottish women's amateur golf championship at Prestwick today _ and then faced a 3hr anxious wait to see if she would figure among the 32 leaders who go on to the match-play stages.
Clare, 21-year-old Strathclyde University student from Drumpellier, shot an 81- six over par on another windy day but still a much better performance than her opening 89 which put her well down the scoreboard.
The projected qualifying total was 171 but Miss Queen's aggregate of 170 was too close for comfort for her to be certain of surviving the cut until the last player finished.
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), overnight leader with a 73, had putting problems in the opening holes of her second round. She three-putted the short second and also the fourth and fifth.
Thirteen-year-old Kelsey Macdonald (Nairn Dunbar), who finished with a hat-trick of birdies for a 79 in the first round, began her second round par-birdie, holing a 12ft putt for a 2 at the short second.
