SCOTTISH WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
MARTINE BEATS PAM IN BATTLE OF BIRDIES
Pam Feggans had six birdies in a row and a bag of eight in all - but still lost an incredible quarter-final tie at the 19th to Martine Pow in the Scottish women's amateur championship at an almost windless Prestwick today.
Martine, 39-year-old from Selkirk, thus entered the semi-finals for the second year in a row and was set to play Curtis Cup reserve Clare Queen (Strathclyde University) for a place in Saturday morning's 18-hole final.
Clare, who survived a play-off to make the match-play stages and then scrambled through at the 19th in the second round, recaptured her form in winning by 3 and 2 against Fife county champion Katrina Milne (Dunfermline).
The other semi-final featured defending champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) and Sara Bishop, the 30-year-old repeating Dunbartonshire & Argyll champion from Windyhill.
Anne won by 3 and 2 over Fiona Lockhart (St Regulus) while No 2 qualifier Sara was a 4 and 3 winner against Alexandra Young (Torrance House).
Doon Valley's Pam Feggans, a golf scholarship student at Florida Southern University, finished joint second in the NCAA Division 2 women's championship on Saturday and then boarded a plane to fly back to Scotland.
She made a bad start in her quarter-final against Martine Pow - and, in the final analysis, that was cost her dearly. Pam lost the second, the third, where she went out of bounds, and the fourth where Miss Pow holed a wedge second shot for an eagle 3.
Miss Feggans got her first birdie at the fifth, a 2, to cut the deficit to two and then started her incredible run of six birdies in a row from the eighth.
Martine was able to halve some of them and at the end of the purple patch, the match was all square.
The barrage of birdies was not over yet. Martine got a 3 at the 16th to get her nose in front again and then took three to get on the green to lose the 17th to a par. After the 18th was halved in birdie 3s, Miss Pow triumphed at the first extra hole, holing a 30ft putt for yet another birdie.
Both players were well under par at the finish. A pity one of them had to lose.
Clare Queen was never behind against Katrina Milne after birdieing the third but Katrina twice pulled her back to all square on the outward half.
Clare really swung the tide her way when she eagled the 10th with a drive, five-wood and a 25ft putt to go one up for a third time.
"I got a lucky bounce close to the flag to birdie the 11th and that put me two up," said Clare who matched her opponent's birdie at the 12th.
A par at the 14th was enough to put Queen three up and that virtually ended Miss Milne's challenge.
