WALLACE BOOTH'S RECORD ROUND
MAKES HIM HALFWAY LEADER
American college student Wallace Booth from Crieff shaved a stroke off the Brunston Castle course record yesterday (Sat) with a six-under-par round of 66 and jumped two shots clear of the field at the halfway stage of the Scottish youths' open amateur stroke-play golf championship at the Ayrshire venue.
Booth had been five shots off the pace with an opening effort of 71 but a seven-under-par tally of 137 has him in a commanding position with two rounds to play today.
But Wallace will need to stay on the ball because the pack behind him have proven records. Title-holder Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw) and another player from the US college circuit, Kevin McAlpine (Alyth) are Booth's closest rivals on 139.
Two shots farther back on 141 are Scott Henry (Cardross), impressive winner of the Scottish boys' match-play championship in April, and Stirling University student Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen), winner of the Scottish MEN'S open amateur stroke-play championship earlier this month.
Booth, a former Scottish Under-16 boys' champion who has just completed his first year of a golf scholarship at Augusta State University, had a flawless round of six birdies in halves of 33 out (three under par) and 33 home (three under par).
