BP SCOTTISH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP AT PUMPHERSTON

KELLY KOs TOP SEED CARLY AT PUMPHERSTON

TITLE-Holder Kelly Brotherton from Tulliallan cut leading qualifier Carly Booth down to size in the second round of the BP Scottish girls' golf championship at Pumpherston on Wednesday.
Carly, recently turned 12 years old but with a handicap of 3 and everybody's tip to for the top, was being fancied to avenge last year's 25th hole second-round defeat at Newmachar in this championship by Miss Brotherton who had looked a bit off form in the qualifying rounds on Tuesday.
Miss Booth had looked to be continuing in fine fettle when she won her opening match-play tie by 5 and 3 against the No 32 qualifier, Rachel Myles (St Leonards). But Loretto School pupil Kelly, 18, ended Miss Booth's Scottish title hopes for another year by a 2 and 1 margin.
Kelly now plays Michele Thomson from Ellon - winner of the Bank of Scotland Junior Masters' girls title at Gleneagles last autumn - in Thursday morning's quarter-finals.
Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry), who qualified surprisingly high at No 4, lived up to that promising start by ousting Sally Kettlewell (Dunblane) 6 and 5 and then taking the bigger scalp of Lesley Hendry (Routenburn) by one hole in the second round.
Sally now plays last year's Scottish schoolgirls champion Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) who won surprisingly comfortably, by 5 and 3, against this year's Scottish schoolgirls title-winner, Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), a member of the Scotland team in last week's European Under-18 girls' team championship in Paris.
Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old) and Sarah Herd (Dunblane), who have made more headway than anticipated, meet in the third quarter-final while last year's beaten finalist, Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), winner of the Scottish Under-16 girls' open title earlier this season, should have a battle royal against Roseanne Niven (Crieff), the current Perth & Kinross women's county champion, and last year's winner of the national age-group title Krystle now holds.
Krystyle won her round two tie by 3 and 2 against Sally Watson's sister, Rebecca.
Roseanne Niven was given a tough fight by Amanda Edwards (Liberton) before winning on the last green.
