MELISSA LEADING QUALIFIER AT GAINSBOROUGH
Melissa Reidwas the leading qualifier with a 36-hole total of 143 in the English Girls’ Championship at Gainsborough Golf Club, Lincs.
Melissa, 16 years old from Chevin, had four birdies in a row in her first-round score of one-under-par 71. She followed that up with a 72 which included a double boey at the fourth after thinning her chip through the green. She rescued her front nine score with three consecutive birdies from the sixth.
Melissa’s back nine was level until the 18th when she drove too far into the grassy dip. Her second shot was well short of the green but a pitch from 70 yards hit the pin, finishing 10ft away.
Claire Aitken (Mid-Kent) and Kiran Matharu (Sand Moor) were joint second qualifiers with 144.
Claire scored 71 and 73 while Kiran returned a pair of 72s.
The cut for the championship flight was 154.
