IRISH WOMEN'S OPEN STROKE-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
The Irish Ladies’ Open Stroke Play Championship will have a stronginternational flavour at Cork Golf Club next Saturday and Sunday.
Players from Austria, Belgium, England, Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Scotland will be attempting to take the title out of Ireland for only the second time in the championship’s 12-year history.
Scottish champion and Curtis Cup player Anne Laing was the winner at Birr in 2001. She will not be competing this year but there are four entries from Scotland, including Elizabeth McKinnon (Nairn), who plays off a plus onehandicap and is a former New Zealand junior champion who now lives near Inverness since she married Scottish businessman Roy McKinnon. Roy doubles up as Liz's caddie.
Curtis Cup player Claire Coughlan will be defending the title on her home course of Cork GC, Little Island. She was a comfortable winner at Rathsallagh last year with a 54 hole total of 215, seven shots ahead of runner-up Maura Morrin (Curragh).
A former Lancôme Irish Close Champion, Claire was the Curtis Cup star of the British and Irish team thatlost narrowly to America at Formby in June. The Cork girl was the only unbeaten home player with three wins from three starts.
All eight Ireland players from last September’s sensational last-day victory over England at Cruden Bay, to secure the Home International Championship for only thefourth time in the history of the event, are in the 80 strong draw.
Claire’s team mates Tara Delaney, Maria Dunne, Helen Jones, Sinead Keane, Tricia Mangan, Maura Morrin and Heather Nolan will also be in action.
Newly crowned Lancôme Irish Close Champion Deirdre Smith will also be a strong contender to become only the second player to win Ireland's Close andthe Open Strokeplay in the same year. Rebecca Coakley, now aprofessional, achieved the double in 2002.
The Irish Intermediate (under 23) Championship will be played in conjunction with the main 54-hole tournament which will have 36 holes played on the Saturday and the final round on the Sunday.
