GIRLS' HOME INTERNATIONALS AT STRATHAVEN
SCOTS GIRLS LOSE TO WALES
SCOTLAND were beaten 5-4 by Wales while defending champions England overpowered Ireland 6-3 on the rain-hit opening day of the girls' home golf internationals at Strathaven Golf Club.
The Scots took the foursomes 2-1 but only Gemma Webster (Hilton Park) and 12-year-old Carly Booth (Auchterarder) won in the singles.With the overall match tied at 4-4, everything hinged on the final singles between Scottish schoolgirls champion Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) and Lucy Gould from Bargoed.
At the turn, the match was all square but the Welsh girl finished more strongly to win 2 and 1 and clinch a 5-4 win for Wales.The singles programme in Thursday's matches - Scotland v England and Ireland v Wales - will be played in the morning in case the rain returns and wipes out the afternoon play.
