RUSSIAN WINS STRATHTYRUM TROPHY
DARIA BENEFITS FROM CHANGE OF FORMAT
Russian Daria Anisimova from Moscow City won the St Andrews Links' women's open tournament for the Strathtyrum Trophy over the Eden Course on Friday.
She added a CSS-matching score of 72 to her first-round 77 for a three-stroke win with an aggregate of 149.
Holly Aitchison (Bedfordshire) was runner-up with 75 and 77 for 153 - one shot ahead of Karen Marshall (Baberton) and Laura Collin (John O'Gaunt).
It is interesting to ponder whether Miss Anisimova would have won the Strathtyrum Trophy, had the original stroke-play/match-play format remained in place. The qualifying round scores and the match-play programme scrapped when bad weather meant it would have been impossible to complete it within the scheduled time.
Daria Anismova had scores of 83 and 95 for 178 in the qualifying rounds. Had the match-play gone ahead, she would have been the 23rd of the 32 qualifiers.
Her form in the substitute 36-hole medal-play competition left her earlier standard well behind.
And what about Ann Ramsay, the Scottish universities champion from Kirriemuir? She would have been the No 1 seed for the match-play with scores of 73 and 78 for 151 - three shots ahead of Karen Marshall.
After the switch, Ann Ramsay finished joint fifth on 154.
The Strathtyrum Salver, played under handicap, was won by Sarah Simmonds, a 21-handicapper from Sweetswood Park, Kent. She had two net scores of 73 for a total of 146 and a one-shot win from Jan Sheargold (Shifnall), who plays off 16, and had net scores of 74 and 73 for 147.
