ENGLISH COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
YORKSHIRE CRUSH HAMPSHIRE TO WIN TITLE
Yorkshire won the English Ladies Golfing Association county finals on points after finishing the three-day programme with a crushing 8-1 win over Hampshire.
All four counties started the final day with one win and one defeat to their credit.
Glamorgan, who had beaten Yorkshire 5-4 on the second day, signed off with a 6-3 win over Warwickshire, which gave them 13 game points compared with Yorkshire's 17pt.
Outstanding player for Yorkshire was Cheryl Smith with six wins out of six, closely followed by Rachel Bell and Michelle Smith, each with 4pt out of five.
Emma Duggleby, so often the mainstay of Yorkshire efforts in the past, was not at her best this week. She was not fielded in the final day foursomes or singles after taking only one point from four matches over Wednesday and Thursday.
For Glamorgan, who were runners-up for the second year in a row, Curtis Cup player Anna Highgate was the top performer with five wins from six outings.
Katie Thompson, only 13 years old, made her debut for Hampshire in the final match against Yorkshire. She was three down at one stage but showed great promise for the future by taking her match to the last green before admitting defeat.
