Hampshire beat Glamorgan 7-2 and Yorkshire beat Warwickshire 5-4 on the opening day of the English women's county finals at High Post Golf Club.
Both teams had strong starts, winning their respective foursomes 2 -1.
Jackie Keay the Hampshire Captain said, “I have a brilliant young team. We have had a hard battle to get here, anything else will be a bonus”.
Katie Thompson, the youngest player - 13th birthday on Wednesday - is looking forward to her debut match in the county finals.
Kerry Smith was in the winning team when Hampshire last won the event in 1995. Kerry lost her foursomes match with Sarah White to Lydia Hall and Curtis Cup player and Welsh cap Anna Highgate by 2 and 1.
Warwickshire won the first three singles matches from Yorkshire.
Former Curtis Cup captain and player Claire Dowling won the top match against current Curtis Cup player Emma Duggleby at the 21st hole. This was Claire’s first competitive match at this level for 12 years.
She said “I went out hoping to get as far as I could so I am thrilled to have won”. Yorkshire fought back to win the last three singles and the exciting match 5-4.On Thursday Hampshire play Warwickshire and Yorkshire play Glamorgan.
