SCOTTISH SENIOR WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP

KATHLEEN WINS SENIORS TITLE ON DEBUT

Royal Montrose player Kathleen Sutherland, making her debut in the over-50s tournament, won the Scottish senior women's championship over the windswept Southerness Golf Club links near Dumfries on Friday.
Overnight leader Kathleen, the Angus county captain from Broughty Ferry, added an 80 in the testing conditions to her first-day 76 for an aggregate of 156 to win by four strokes from Anna Telfer (Milngavie) who had an 81 for 160.
Former Scottish veterans champion Rose Anderson (Huntly) and Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) both had the same aggregate of 161. Third prize went to Rose on the better second round - a 79 to Noreen's 82).
Vivienne Harper (Deeside) had the best net aggregate of 153 off a handicap of 11 after a countback.
Defending champion Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar Park) had a 9 at the 16th in her second round - and then finished birdie-birdie for an 89 and an aggregate of 171.
So strong was the wind that in terms of a CSS for handicaps, it was non-counting.

Miss Sutherland's additional reward for winning the title was a place in the Scotland team of six for the Senior women's home internationals at Kilkeel Golf Club, County Down from October 5 to 7.
