SCOTTISH SENIOR WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHP
KATHLEEN SUTHERLAND LEADS AT SOUTHERNESS
ANGUS women's county golf captain Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) took a two-stroke halfway lead in the Scottish senior women's championship over the Southerness Golf Club links on the shores of the Solway Firth on Thursday with a round of 76.
That represented a good score in very windy conditions, periodically laced with rain, pushing the standard scratch score up by two shots from 73 to 75.
Miss Sutherland, who lives at Broughty Ferry and has won the Angus title several times, said she did "nothing spectacular, just played the ball from A to B to C."
Her closest rival at the start of Friday's second and final round is Heather Anderson (Troon Ladies), Scottish women's amateur champion in 1969 at West Kilbride and still a marvellous competitor in her 70s.
Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar Park), winner of the title at Ballater 12 months ago, is lying joint 12th on 82.
