ESPIRITO SANTO TROPHY LATEST
GB&I IMPROVING BEFORE BAD WEATHER
HALTS PLAY IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Sweden had joined Canada in the lead – six shots ahead of pre-tournament favourites United States – when rain caused a 2hr 50min hold-up during the third round of the women’s world amateur team golf championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy at Rio Mar Country Club, Rio Grande in Puerto Rico (on Friday).
Great Britain & Ireland looked set to return their lowest team score of the three days but they were still well out of the title hunt.
Welsh left-hander Stephanie Evans (Vale of Llangollen), after a miserable first two days with scores of 77 and 81, shot a three-over-par 75, which still included a quadruple bogey at the eighth.
Clare Queen (Drumpellier) and Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton) had only one hole to play when the players were called in from the course because of the bad weather.
Clare, after a 75 and 76, was five over par for the third round on her last tee, having started at the 10th and run up a triple bogey 7 at the 17th in a six-over-par score of 42 for her first nine holes.
Emma Duggleby, on the other hand, had six birdies in the bag and, despite a double-bogey at the 17th, was one-under-par for the day with one hole to play.
At the head of the leaderboard when play was halted, the situation was:
Sweden and Canada 9 under par.
United States 3 under par.
Colombia 1 under par.
Korea level par.
