ESPIRITO SANTO TROPHY
GB&I GIRLS STRUGGLING ON DAY
2 OF WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Great Britain & Ireland’s girls were struggling to stay within a respectable distance of the pacemaking Canadians on the second day of the women’s world amateur team golf championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy at Rio Mar Country Club, Rio Grande in Puerto Rico.
Clare Queen from Drumpellier and Yorkshire’s Emma Duggleby were both three over par for the day with three holes to play after bad weather delayed the start of the second round until 9am local time.
Clare had a 75 and Emma a 74 in the first round.
Welsh left-hander Stephanie Evans (Vale of Llangollen) is the third member of the team and with only two from three scores counting, she was not going to contribute to the GB&I total for the second day in a row.
Stephanie had four double-bogeys and was 11 over par for the day with two holes to play.
Canada – coached by Dean Spriddle from Dunfermline – let their standard slip a bit on the second day, posting a team total of 145, compared with 137 in the first round. But their running team total of 282 still gave them a three-stroke halfway advantage from Sweden whose Karin Sjodin was the individual leader with 69 and 70 for five-under-par 139.
The Swedes leapfrogged over United States into second place with a second-round total of 141 for 285.
The Americans fell back even more than the Canadians with 147 for 286.
