ELLON TEENAGER LEADS SHIRE QUALIFIERS
Ellon teenager Michele Thomson headed the 16 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the Aberdeenshire women's county championship with a very good round of three-over-par 75 in windy conditions at Murcar on Friday evening.
Michele, who turned 17 last month, cut her handicap to four with her performance despite a nightmare start of 6-5-6 (double bogey-bogey-double bogey). Birdies at the short fifth and ninth put her out in 40 and then she matched the par of 35 for the inward half with birdies at the 11th and 18th cancelling out bogeys at the 10th and 15th.
Julie Henderson (Inverurie), the 2003 champion, earned the No 2 seed rating with a 77, a shot ahead of Donna Pocock (Murcar).
Sjavon Wilson (Murcar) is unable to defend the Aberdeenshire title as she is currently attending Tyler College, Texas and will not return to Scotland until late May.
Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies), beaten by Sjavon in last year's final, broke her left arm in a heavy fall while taking her dog a walk and had to withdraw from this year's field.
