LADY PROS BEAT ADA'S AMATEURS 14-4 AT WENTWORTH
The Ladies' Europen Tour professionals team, captained by Nicola Moult, avenged last year's defeat by the Great Britain & Ireland Elite squad of female amateur golfers, with a comprehensive 14-4 victory over skipper Ada O'Sullivan's line-up at The Wentworth Club today (Saturday).
The writing was on the wall for the amateurs, whose victory over the pros at Formby 12 months ago, was only their second in an annual match that started in 1994, when they were whitewashed 6-0 in the morning foursomes. Only one of the alternate-shot ties went as far as the 18th green.
Curtis Cup captain Ada has a reputation for being an inspirational leader but even she could not repaint the one-sided picture over the 12 concluding singles.
Clare Queen, the British women's open amateur stroke-play champion from Drumpellier, did halve the top afternoon tie against England's Kirsty A Taylor but wins for the professionals by Australians Corinne Dibnah and Karen Lunn as well Julie Forbes from Aboyne gave the LET squad the 9 1/2 pt they needed to clinch overall victory midway through the afternoon.
Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton), who will be defending the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play title at Troon next weekend, Claire Coughlan (Cork) and Sophie Walker (Kenwick Park) chalked up the GB&I amateur's first and only wins of the day.
Scottish champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), the only other Scot in the amateurs' line-up, went down by 3 and 2 to Lora Fairclough from Chorley, Lancashire after being all square at the turn.
Former Solheim Cup skipper Dale Reid from Ladybank was one of the few professionals not to win. She lost on the last green to Sophie Walker (Kenwick Park).
The pros finally took the singles by an 8-4 margin.
