ANGUS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

MARY SUMMERS CHAMPION FOR SIXTH TIME

Mary Summers (Panmure Barry), a former British girls championship beaten finalist, regained the Angus women's county golf title after a 10-year gap by beating the defending champion, Lynne Fotheringham (Abertay) by 4 and 3 in the final at Forfar today.
It was Mrs Summers' sixth county title success. As Mary Mackie she won it for the first time in 1985 and was Mary Summers when she won the title again in 1987, 1991, 1992 and 1994. She was beaten finalist in 1986, 1993, 1997 and 1998.
Mary came through an epic morning semi-final at the 22nd against Jane Tough (Brechin) while Lynne won on the last green against the 2000-2001 double champion Ann Ramsay (Kirriemuir).
Ashley Smith (Kirriemuir), only 15 years of age, won the handicap championship. She beat Sarah Chapman (Forfar) at the 19th in the final.
