QUEEN IN REGAL FORM IN RAIN
AT CRUDEN BAY
The Big Two of the Scottish women's amateur championship - title-holder Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) and Clare Queen (Drumpellier), last year's beaten finalist, made impressive starts to the match-play stages despite a steady downpour at Cruden Bay today.
Clare Queen, the No 1 seed by a three-stroke margin, continued her fine form from the qualifying rounds to win her opening tie by 5 and 4 against Pamela Williamson.
The 22-year-old British stroke-play champion from Drumpellier was one under par in beating her Baberton opponent who has won several over-50s titles at home and overseas over the last two or three years.
Miss Queen was five up at the turn with the help of birdies at the long fifth and eighth. Mrs Williamson won back the short 11th, where Clare had her only bogey of the round, but lost the long 13th to a par.
The match, played at a commendable speed, was all over on the 14th green in 2 3/4hr.
"That's my last tie in the 'Scottish' - for good," said Pamela Williamson. "I've played in about 26 or 27 of them and this is a nice way to go out, beaten by a very good player."
Former Scottish champion Alison Davidson (Stirling), who won the British title over the Cruden Bay links in 1997, bowed out on the last green to Kylie Walker (Stirling University).
Like Mrs Williamson, Mrs Davidson, the mother of two young children, may have played in the "Scottish " for the last time, although she is only 36.
At the other end of the age scale, Kelsey Macdonald, the 14-year-old Northern Counties women's champion from Nairn Dunbar, was beaten 4 and 2 by Karen Marshall (Baberton) after being two up on the outward half.
Karen turned the tie in her favour by birdieing the eighth and then winning the 10th, 11th and 12th with par figures to go two up. Karen's third birdie of the round, at the 15th, put her three up.
Anne Laing, seeking to join the select band of players who have won the title three years in succession, won by 6 and 5 against former Murcar member Rhona MacLennan (Baberton).
Carol Wilson, who is a Murcar player, lost by 8 and 7 to Emily Ogilvy (Muckhart), just back from the United States where she is a student at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
