BRITISH WOMEN'S OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
CLARE AND JENNA MEET IN
ALL-SCOTS TIE IN LAST 16
Scotland team-mates Clare Queen from Drumpellier will play Lanarkshire county champion Jenna Wilson from Strathaven for a place in the quarter-finals of the Tropicana Essentials British women’s open amateur golf championship at Littlestone, Kent on Friday morning.
They are the only Scots still standing in the last 16 after the five survivors won their first-round ties of the match-play stages.
Then three times Scottish champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), Stirling University student Kylie Walker and Heather MacRae (Dunblane New) bowed out in the afternoon’s second round programme.
Clare, 22, who already holds one British title – the stroke-play – beat Emma Sheffield (Newark) at the 19th after a stunning fightback.
Miss Queen, the West of Scotland champion, was never ahead at any stage until she holed from 6ft for knock-out birdie 3 at the first extra hole. Her opponent missed from inside that distance for a half that would have prolonged the tie.
Clare was three down after 12 holes but, on a course like Littlestone where to miss the fairway is to drop a shot automatically, she knew she still had a chance if she could just hang on.
Sure enough, Miss Queen won the 13th and 15th to be all square and then slipped one down again at the 17th. Clare’s nerve was put to the test again at the long 18th where she was in a greenside bunker in two. She got up and down from the sand for a birdie 4 to square the contest.
"I was striking the ball pretty well but hitting a few scrappy shots at times. I’ve holed a few good putts over the week and I just hope that continues although it’s a pity I have to play Jenna in the third round."
Miss Queen, a certainty for the Great Britain & Ireland team for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Chantilly in July, does not intend hanging around for next year’s Curtis Cup match in the United States. She will try for a Ladies European Tour card at the end of the year.
Jenna Wilson, who will be 21 on June 22, claimed the notable scalp of Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton) in the second round after disposing of a German, Thea Hoffmeister, by 3 and 2 in the morning.
Miss Duggleby’s best years may be behind her at the age of 33 but she won the British title in 1994, was beaten finalist in 2000 and 2001 and has played in three Curtis Cup matches, winning three points out of four at Formby last year.
But it was still a very good win for young Jenna who is a former Scottish Under-21 champion and has been selected to play for Scotland in the European team championship in Sweden early next month.
Like Clare Queen, Jenna was two down at the turn but kept battling on to square the game and then win it with a birdie 4 at the 18th.
"This is definitely one of my best results. Although I wasn’t shooting a lot of birdies, I was steady enough to keep Emma within a two-hole lead," said Jenna who spent a successful golfing year at San Diego State University before returning home.
Three times Scottish champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) went down by 3 and 1 in the second round to France’s Alexandra Vilatte. Three down after six, Anne got two holes back with birdies at the seventh and 11th but bogeys at the 14th and 17th sealed her fate.
"I’m not too disappointed to lose to a very good player. Alexandra should go far in the game," said a sporting Miss Laing.
Kylie Walker (Stirling University) went down in the second round by 2 and 1 to the experienced Irish player, Tricia Mangan, the No 9 qualifier from Ennis.
Heather MacRae almost made it three Scots in the round of the last 16 but she lost a very tight match on the 18th green to Canadian Veronique Drouin.
Results involving Scots:
FIRST ROUND
A Laing (Vale of Leven) bt S Doering (Ger) at 19th.
K Walker (Stirling Univ) bt N Duvalois (Net) at 20th.
J Wilson (Strathaven bt T Hoffmeister (Ger) 3 and 2.
C Queen (Drumpellier) bt B Mozo (Spa) 2 and 1.
H MacRae (Dunblane New) bt H Nolan (Ireland) 3 and 2.
