MOIRA THOMSON JOINT 7TH AT CHANTILLY
Roy Smethurst from Crewe, beaten by Stirling’s David Smith in a title-play-off last year, won the European men’s senior amateur championship at Chantilly, France.
Smethurst produced a great last round of one-under-par 70 for a 54-hole final total of five-over 218. He won by a single shot from Germany’s Hans-Gunter Reiter.
David Smith, bidding for a hat-trick of titles, faded with a last-round 82 for 236 and a share of 31st place.
Brian Grieve from the King James VI club, Perth was the top Scot in joint 15th place. He finished with a 76 for 234.
North Berwick’s Moira Thomson, the only Scot in the senior women’s field, signed off with an 80 for joint seventh place on 241.
France’s Cecilia Mourgue d’Algue won the title for a fifth time with a two-under-par final round of 71 for a total of three-over 222. She won by 12 shots from England's Carole Caldwell who had a closing round of 78.
