US REGAIN PALMER CUP
JAMIESON RUNS INTO BIRDIE BLITZ
Scott Jamieson ran into a birdie blitz in the top singles on the final day as the United States regained the annual American college students match for the Palmer Cup at Whistling Straits Golf Club, Mosel on the shores of Lake Michigan at Wisconsin on Thursday.
Jamieson, who had won his foursomes tie in partnership with David Skinns from Lincoln, was hit by five successive birdies from the first hole by Matt Every. The American went on to win by 2 and 1, which represented a good fightback by the Scot.
The Americans won six of the final programme of eight singles for a 14-10 victory.
The contest had been level at the end of each of the first three sessions of play.
Europe won the last two singles to finish – Sweden’s Kalle Edberg, an Augusta State University team-mate of Scott Jamieson, beating Matthew Rosenfeld by one hole after being two down while Spain’s Alejandro Canizares beat Spencer Levin on the 18th green.
It was the American college boys’ first win in the Palmer Cup series since 2002 but increases their overall lead to 5-3 with one draw.
