IRISH GIRLS CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIP

DANIELLE HEADS MATCH-PLAY QUALIFIERS

Current international Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down Ladies) shot a 36-hole level par aggregate to win the Muwick Cup and lead the qualifiers at the 2005 Lancôme Irish Girls Close Championship at Charleville Golf Club today
McVeigh struggled over her opening round and stood on the seventh tee at four over par. However she rapidly found her rhythm and recorded birdies at 7, 11, 17 and 18 to card a 2 over par 74 in the morning.
The afternoon’s round saw her birdie five holes from the eighth through 13th, with a par on 12. This, along with birdies on 3 and 18. saw her register a new course record 70, at 2 under par.
Six shots back was Roscommon’s Anne McCormack who recorded a 73 in the damp afternoon conditions to add to her uneventful 77 in the morning. She birdied 2, 4, 6 and 8 to turn two under the card after nine.
Conditions worsened for the late starters and a frustrating back nine saw her card four bogeys and a single birdie on the 17th.
Ever improving Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush) birdied 7, 14 and 17 in the afternoon to match her morning 76 while early pace setter Victoria Bradshaw birdied 13, 15 and 17 in her morning 72 but failed to repeat her excellent form carding an 81 in the afternoon.
There were no major "casualties" in this year’s championship with the cut at 161.
McVeigh takes on 16th qualifier Lucy Simpson (Massereene) at 9.40am tomorrow morning while McCormack faces a tough assignment against Ennis’s Sarah Cunningham.
Third seed Meadow plays Interprovincial Orla Dunphy (Kilkenny) while Sarah Faller (Galway) plays current international Fiona Carroll (Athenry).
