LANCOME IRISH GIRLS CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIP
TOP SEED DANIELLE MARCHES THROUGH
TO LAST FOUR
Leading qualifier Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co. Down Ladies) continued her impressive form at Charleville Golf Club, County Cork today, marching into the semi-finals of the 2005 Lancôme Irish girls closed championship.
McVeigh led from the start in both of today’s matches, sweeping aside 16th qualifier Lucy Simpson by 5 and 3 and Under-18 international Emma Gilmore 6 and 4 in the afternoon.
Having led the field by a full six strokes after the 36-hole qualifying test, McVeigh is well on course to add this year’s national title to her Ulster title won three weeks ago.
Victoria Bradshaw advanced to the last four, beating Alice Davis on the 19th hole in the morning. Limerick’s Linda Toomey continued her good form when she disposed of Louise Coffey in the morning and edged out Stephanie Meadow on the final green. Meadow, only 13 years old was one up with four to play but missed the 15th green, found water at the par 3 16th and a birdie-par finish was not enough to make up the one-hole deficit.
The fourth semi-finalist, Sarah Cunningham, beat No 2 qualifier Anne McCormack in the morning and dashed Laura Holmes’ hopes of her first title with a 2 and 1 win in the afternoon.
In the plate, Midland Junior Champion Aedin Murphy needed an extra hole to see off Headfort’s Ciara Walsh while Tipperary’s Aoife Lowry was taken to the 20th by the talented Valerie Power. Championship (Blake Cup)
