NORTH OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP
TEENAGER MICHELE WINS TITLE
ELLON teenager Michele Thomson camed back from two down with six to play to beat Anne Hay (Letham Grange) by one hole in the final of the North of Scotland women's golf championship in very wet conditions at Banchory Golf Club today.
Seventeen-year-old Michele is one of the youngest winners of the trophy. The last teenager to win it was Claire Hunter (Deeside) who was 19 when she won this championship at Murcar in 1997.
For Mrs Hay it was a second losing appearance in the final. She was beaten by Lyndsey Devenish (Cruden Bay) in 2002 at Downfield.
It was thanks to the Banchory greenkeeping staff that the course in general and the greens in particular were kept playable after prolonged and heavy rain overnight continued most of the day.
Miss Thomson, who made her county debut for Aberdeenshire recently, won the first two holes, the second with a birdie but her experienced opponent squared the contest with successes at the fourth and sixth.
Still all square at the turn, Ann Hay looked to have taken a grip on the proceedings when she holed from off the green to win the 10th and was conceded the 12th after Michele landed in the burn off the tee.
Michele's fortunes suddenly changed when she was able to win three holes in a row from the 14th with par figures and survived a wild hook off the 18th tee to get a half in 5 to clinch her victory.
Lauren MacCallum completed a double for junior members of McDonald Ellon Golf Club by beating Mhairi Johnstone (Northern) in the final of the handicap championship. Lauren, winner of the Scottish schoolgirls’ handicap title at St Andrews Bay last month, beat Mhairi by one-hole in a very even contest. Lauren plays off 12 and Mhairi, the Aberdeen schoolgirls title-winner, plays off 10.
