NORTH OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP

SCHOOLGIRLS CHAMP LAURA LEADS
FIELD AT BANCHORY WITH 69

Scottish schoolgirls golf champion Laura Murray from Alford maintained her grand form of the past few weeks by heading the 16 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the North of Scotland women's championship at Banchory Golf Club.
Laura lifted the tone of the tournament with an excellent round of two-under-par 69 on a glorious sunny day.
Miss Murray, who won't be 17 years old until next month, squeezed six birdies into halves of 33 (two under par) and 36 (level par) She birdied the second, fourth, sixth, 11th, 17th and 18th. She bogeyed the ninth, 10th, 13th and 14th.
The No 2 seed in the draw is Kerri Harper from Inverness with a 72. She was on her way to a brilliant score when she reached the turn in three-under 32 with birdies at the second, fourth and seventh but she ran up a double bogey 5 at the short 12th and dropped further shots at the 13th, 16th and 17th before fishing with a birdie for 40 home.
Including Laura Murray, there are three teenagers among the qualifiers - Aberdeenshire county player Michelle Thomson (McDonald Ellon) and Ashton Ingram, who made the long trip across country from Fort-Willam. Ashton was alongside SLGA Clark Rosebowl winner Donna Pocock (Murcar) on the 73 mark while Michele had a 77.
Stirling University student Dawn Dewar claimed the last of the 16 places with a 79.
Katy McNicoll (Carnoustie Ladies), the youngster who reached the semi-finals 12 months ago and returned a gross 70 round the Old Course, St Andrews in the St Rule Trophy recently, failed to make it with an 81.
Other surprise non-qualifiers included former Scottish veterans' champion Rose Anderson (Huntly) 82, one more than Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay), the SLGA treasurer who lost in the final of the Scottish veterans' championship two or three years back.
