SCOTTISH GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
SCOTTISH BOYS AND GIRLS' UNDER-14 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Family rivalry and one-upmanship will be to the fore when the Scottish Boys and Girls Under 14 Stroke Play Championships take place at Craigielaw Golf Club in Edinburgh on 8th July.
While 13 year old Andrew McLachlan from Eastwood tries to emulate big brother Peter’s triumph in this event four years ago, sisters Lauren and Jill Meldrum from Dullatur will both be on the course in a head to head challenge.
Several talented youngsters return for another crack at the Under 14 titles, having only just missed out a year ago. In the boys’ event, Tom Lewis (Mid Herts), Ben Alexander (Craigielaw) and Mark Murphy (Cawder), who finished joint third, fifth and eight respectively, are back in the field.
Lewis will have the distinction of being the lowest handicap player (1.6) in the field while Alexander, one of the youngest competitors, should benefit from local knowledge of his home course. The youngest competitor in the boys’ event is eleven year old Stephen Machin from Cowglen.
Four girls who finished in the top 10 twelve months ago are also back to try again. Samantha Colecliffe from Rhyl, joint second last year, tees up again along with Eilidh Briggs from Ranfurly Castle who finished fifth, Annabel Niven (Crieff) who finished eighth and Kirriemuir’s Louise Smith who came tenth.
Peter McLachlan won the Under 14 Championship in 2001 and has continued his success, winning this year’s Scottish Youth’s Stroke Play Championship at Glenbervie in June.
Eighty-four boys and 26 girls will play at Craigielaw with the USA, United Arab Emirates and Finland represented in addition to the home countries.
