BRITISH WOMEN'S AMATEUR STROKE-PLAY
RAIN THREATENS SECOND-DAY'S PLAY
Several hours of unrelenting rain were threatening the second day's play in the British women's open amateur golf championship at Nairn Golf Club today.
"The rain began during the night and just hasn't stopped," said Susan Simpson, the Ladies Golf Union tournament director.
"We've moved four pin positions to higher areas on the greens and there's a lot of squeegeeing going on ahead of the players by course manager Ian Carson's staff. There's water everywhere but the course is playable at the moment."
The field of over 100 completed the first round yesterday with Sophie Walker from Derbyshire and Nicole Gergely of Austria sharing the lead on one-under-par 71.
They were one shot ahead of Heather Macrae from Dunblane New, who flies to California on Tuesday for her final year of a golf scholarship at San Diego State University.
Two other Scottish girls who are students at American colleges are bracketed with Germany's Sanda Gal in joint fourth place on 73.
Louise Kenney, a former Scottish girls' match-play champion from Pitreavie, Fife, has attended Iowa State University for the past four years. She returns on Saturday to complete the final four months of her degree course.
Emily Ogilvy from Muckhart, Perthshire is a student at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
