BRITISH WOMEN'S OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
HEATHER LEADS BY ONE FROM NICOLE
Heather Macrae, in third place overnight, moved into the mid-afternoon clubhouse lead with a second-round 71 for a 36-hole tally of one-under-par 143 at the halfway stage of the Ladies' British open amateur stroke-play championship at The Nairn Golf Club today.
Nicole Gergely (Austria) cut the Scots advantage to one stroke with a 73 for 144.
Heather, a 21-year-old Vagliano Trophy team player from Dunblane, improved by four shots on the seventh hole alone, compared with her first-round 72. Heather ran up an 8 at the seventh first time round. Today she got a birdie 4 with a drive, three-wood second and a pitch and a putt in an outward half of 35.
Her other birdies were a 2 at the short sixth with a four-iron and a 12ft putt, the 10th (drive, five-wood, pitch and putt) and the 15th (drive, wedge, 10ft putt). Miss Macrae's only bogey on the outward half was a three-putt 5 at a time when it was very wet, both underfoot and overhead!
But for a weak finish the Scot, who flies back to California on Tuesday for her final year at San Diego State University, would have established a bigger clubhouse lead.
Heather bogeyed the 16th (missed green) and the 18th (three putts) in an inward 36.
"It was a bit unpleasant on the outward journey with the rain still coming down quite heavily and the course quite wet. But it did slow the greens down a bit and I found them easier to judge, even though I did three-putt twice," said Heather.
Nicole Gergely, joint overnight leader on 71, compiled her 73 with halves of 37 and 36.
She was two over par on the ninth tee after bogeys at the first and eighth but gained birdies at the ninth, 10th and 18th after that. She dropped further shots at the 15th and 16th.
Austrian Katharina Werdinig, 19, also matched the par of 71 to be on 146, three shots behind the Scot.
Katharina birdied the seventh, ninth and 15th with short putts and the 18th with a 30-footer. She bogeyed the sixth and eighth in halves of 36 and 35.
Kiran Matharu from Cookridge Hall looked on course to challenge for the lead when she birdied the eighth and ninth to be out in one-under-par 35 after a 74 in the first round. But she required 40 strokes for the inward half, bogeying the 11th, 13th, 15th and 17th.
Sophie Walker (Kedleston Park), joint overnight leader with Nicole Gergely (Austria) on the 71 mark, lost ground with a 77.
"I didn't play well at all today," she said.
Miss Walker double-bogeyed the short 11th and had no birdies in an inward 39 after birdieing the second and ninth.
