SENIOR WOMEN'S HOME INTERNATIONALS

SCOTS WHIP IRELAND – NOW FOR ENGLAND

Scotland made a confident start to the senior women’s home international golf championship at Radyr Golf Club, near Cardiff.
They whipped Ireland 6-1 by winning all five singles ties after the foursomes had been shared, thanks to a stirring fightback by Moira Thomson (North Berwick) and Liz Campbell (Torwoodlee).
Moira and Liz came back from three down after seven holes to win their foursome by two holes.
England, the defending champions, and bidding for a hat-trick of titles, overpowered Wales 5 ½ - 1 ½ . Scotland play England on Wednesday.
Scottish seniors stroke-play and match-play champion Pamela Williamson (Baberton), after losing in partnership with Rose Anderson (Huntly) in the morning, was an unstoppable force in the singles.
She was three up after seven holes on Valerie Hassett and lost only one hole in recording a 7 and 6 victory.
Moira Thomson, winner of the Scottish veteran women’s title at Blairgowrie last week, quickly put another Scotland point on the board with a 5 and 3 win over Marilyn Henderson after winning three of the first five holes.
St Andrews hotelier Fiona De Vries won the first three holes and four of the first five en route to a 5 and 4 win over Mary Gorry.
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) was two up after three holes against Roma English and ended up winning by 4 and 3.
Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) completed the singles rout of the Irish by jumping into a three-hole lead after six holes against Eileen MacMullen whom she eventually beat by 3 and 1.
