KEENAN AND MILLS DOWN THE
FIELD BEHIND LAS VEGAS LOCALS
South-east England pair Farren Keenan and Matt Mills, both students at Texas University, finished joint 36th and joint 44th respectively in the Southern Highlands Collegiate championship at Las Vegas, Nevada.
Keenan, from Middlesex ended strongly with a one-over-par 73 over a very long Southern Highlands course – 7,510yd with a tough par of 72 – after earlier rounds of 77 and 81. His final total was 231.
Keenan had a double bogey at the fourth in his last round but birdied the third, ninth, 11th and 14th. Bogeys at the 17th and 18th prevented him from breaking par.
Londoner Mills, the top-ranked English player on the American circuit, had rounds of 74, 80 and 78 for a total fo 232. Matt had a double bogey at the fifth in his final round. He birdied the sixth, seventh and 13th.
There was a double success for the home students from University of Nevada Las Vegas who used their local knowledge of the course to good advantage.
They won not only the individual title through Matt Kingsinger (214: 76, 69, 69) by three shots from Sung-sa Han (also UNLV) (74-72-71) and Spain’s Pablo Martin (Oklahoma State) (73-71-73), who tied on 217.
UNLV also won the team title by 10 shots with a total of 879. Georgia (889) were runners-up with Oklahoma State third on 899. Texas (931) finished 13th.
