AMERICAN COLLEGE GOLF

DUTCH GIRL DEWI WINS NCAA TITLE

Dewi Schreefel from Deventer in the Netherlands has won the NCAA Women’s Division 1 college championship over the Scarlet course at Ohio State University.

The 5ft 4in, 20-year-old sophomore student at Southern California University shot a final round of three-under-par 69 to win the title by two strokes with a two-under-par total of 286.

Dewi-Claire, to give her her full first names, has been playing in European events since her very early teens. Now all that experience has come together for a great victory.

Only one of the leading five players – runner-up Jennie Lee (Duke) – is an American.

Third-placed Dal Sol Chung (UNLV) comes from Seoul, Korea and joint fourth-placed Sandra Gal and long-time leader Eileen Vargas come from Germany and Colombia respectively.

Another European to do well was Azahara Munoz (Arizona State), the Spaniard who won the British girls’ open championship at Lanark two years ago. Azahara finished joint fifth on 292.

It was not such a happy tournament for the Kent State University, Ohio  trio of the Delaney sisters from Carlow and Becky Wood from Glossop.

Becky finished joint 68th with a total of 307 with scores of 77, 79, 77 and 74. She had no birdies in her last round, the best of the four.

Tara tied for 98th place on 315 with scores of 76, 76, 85 and 78. She simply could not keep the really destructive figures off her card. In her final round she had a double bogey a the long fourth and a triple bogey at the short 17th.

Over the 72 holes, Tara had 1 quadruple bogey, one triple bogey and six double bogeys – which is not her style at all.

Sister Karen finished joint 120th on 326 with scores of 85,85, 80 and 80. She had double bogeys at the second and 18th in her final round. Over the four rounds, she had 3 triple bogeys and six double bogeys.

Duke (1167) retained the team title by 10 shots from Southern California with Pepperdine (1887) third. Kent State (1229) finished 21st of 24.
