ENGLISH WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
KIRAN (17) PLAYS NAOMI FOR ENGLISH TITLE
Internationals Kiran Matharu and Naomi Edwards will battle it out in an all-Yorkshire final of the English women's close amateur championship at West Lancashire Golf Club on Saturday.
Kiran, 17, beat defending champion Felicity Johnson (Harborne) by 5 and 4 to claim her place in the final. This is the first time the Cookridge Hall player has got past the first round of this event and she's determined to make the most of her chance.
"I'm really hoping and wanting to win this," said Kiran, who was two-under-par when she closed out 19-year-old Felicity with a birdie on the long 14th. Miss Matharu dominated the semi-final, winning the first hole and reaching the turn at 3 up.
"This is the best I've played in the championship so far," added Kiran, who has been working hard with coach Peter Tupling on swing changes and short game technique. "It's all paying off," added the teenager.
Naomi Edwards, the reigning English mid-amateur champion, Welsh open stroke-play champion and last year's St Rule Trophy winner, claimed her place in the final when she beat Danielle Montgomery (Lambourne) 4 and 2.
The Ganton player was never behind in the semi-final but she said: "It was tough out there in the strong winds and it was an up and down match. I was really pleased to win."
This will be Naomi's second final. She was runner-up in the 2003 English championship at Aldeburgh. "I shall give it a shot and see how it goes," she said.
Kiran is the No 4 seed whilte Naomi qualified in 18th place.
