TOP SEEDS GO OUT: IT'S EMMA DUGGLEBY
v FELICITY JOHNSON IN LAST EIGHT
Defending champion Felicity Johnson will take on twice title-winner Emma Duggleby in the quarter finals of the English Ladies' Close Amateur Championship at West Lancashire Golf Club on Friday.
Emma (Malton & Norton) eased comfortably through her first two matches. In the first round she beat international Jodi Ewart (Catterick) 4 and 3 before going on to knock out the top seed, Kerry Smith (Waterlooville), by the same margin.
"That's the best I have played in the championship so far and I really enjoyed the course," she said. "Now, bring on the next round!"
Meanwhile Felicity, (Harborne) 19, beat two teenage stars to prove that she has found her form after struggling in the qualifying stages.
In the first round she ground out the pars to beat English girls' and Helen Holm Scottish open stroke-play champion Melissa Reid (Chevin), 18, by 2 and 1. Then, with growing confidence, Felicity beat 16-year-old girl international Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale) 4 and 3.
Corisande Lee continued to fly the flag for West Lancashire, where she is a member. She reached the quarter-finals with a good second-round win over girl international Joanne Hodge (Knowle).
Her next match is against 17-year-old Danielle Montgomery (Lambourne) who is making impressive progress through her first championship after recently moving to England from Australia.
The upset of the tournament was provided in the first round by Jenny Pease (Braintree), the 31st qualifier, who knocked out the No 2 seed and last year's runner-up, Sophie Walker (Kenwick Park).
Jenny won her place in the match-play only after taking part in a six-way play-off and she held her nerve again through a tight match with Sophie, eventually holing a birdie putt on the 18th to win by one hole.
However, her run was ended by English mid-amateur champion Naomi Edwards (Ganton) who won their second round encounter 5 and 4..
