SKANDIA UNDER-21 BOYS TOURNAMENT
Banchory’s James Byrne, finished a creditable joint 11th in a field of 97 for the Skandia Junior Under-21 Open tournament over three rounds at Boras Golf Club, near
Byrne, only 17 and beaten semi-finalist in the recent Scottish boys’ championship, had scores of 76, 71 and 71 for a two-over-par total of 218.
He finished the tournament strongly with birdies at the 17th and 18th after reaching the turn in one-under-par 34, thanks to a birdie at the long opening hole and another at the eighth after dropping a shot at the second.
James lost a bit of ground when he shed shots at the 10th and 11th but a birdie at the 12th put him back on course and he dropped only one further shot, at the sixth, before his back-to-back birdies at the last two holes.
The other teenagers who made up the Scottish Golf Union party were Lewis Kirton (Newmachar) who tied for 26th place on seven-over-par 223; Scottish boys champion James White (Lundin), who finished 51st with 230, and Cameron Gray (West Kilbride), 51st with 237.
Kirton, who had rounds of 73, 76 and 74, birdied the third but dropped shots at the fifth, 10th and 12th in halves of 35 and 39 in his final outings.
White had improving scores of 80, 77 and 73, birdieing the 10th and 12th in his final round with bogeys at the ninth, 14th and 15th in halves of 36 and 37.
Gray scored 75, 82 and 80. His last round had halves of 38 and 42, including double bogeys at the 12th and 14th.
