US COLLEGE GOLF
NOW KEIR McNICOLL IS GOING TO THE NCAA
DIV 2 CHAMPIONSHIP WITH LYNN UNIVERSITY
Carnoustie’s Keir McNicoll has followed the example of his younger sister Katy by winning a place in the NCAA Division 2 college golf championships later this month.
Both are students at Lynn University, Boca Raton in Florida. Earlier this week Katy shot her lowest round in her first year on the United States women’s circuit as the women’s team finished runners-up in their regional tournament, which meant they qualified for the nationwide Division 2 women’s championship.
Now Keir, coming to the end of his four-year golf scholarship in America, has achieved his lowest ever 54-hole total – six-under-par 210 – to finish fourth in the NCAA Division 2 men’s South/South Central Super regional championship.
Lynn University (861) finished second to Florida Southern University (857) and that also booked them a place at the national Division 2 men’s championship at Glade Springs Resort, Daniels in West Virginia from May 18 to 20.
The 6ft 2in Keir had ever-improving rounds of 72, 70 and 68 over a longish course, some 7,077yd with a par of 72, at The Territory Golf Club, Duncan in Oklahoma. He finished only two shots behind the winner, Will Grace (West Florida) who scored 69,70 and 69 for eight-under-par 208.
It was McNicoll’s sixth consecutive top-10 finish and his seventh in all during the 2005-2006 college season.
Keir started his final round at the 10th and birdied the 11th, 12th and 14th and had a bogey at the 13th in a two-under-par half of 34.
He then birdied the first, seventh and ninth with one bogey, at the fifth, in a two-under 34.
Lynn team-mate Gavin Dear from Perth finished 19th on 223 with scores of 75, 75 and 73. He also started at the 10th and had birdies at the 12th, 18th, second and seventh in halves of 36 and 39.
Matt Bookatz from London is a third British player in the Lynn team. Matt, a junior student, had scores of 77, 72 and 75 for 21st place on 224.
