BRITISH WOMEN'S MID-AM CHAMPIONSHIP

MARTINE WINS BY EIGHT AT NAIRN

 

Scottish champion Martine Pow outclassed the field with a four-over-par total of 220 to win the British women’s open mid-amateur golf championship by eight strokes over the Nairn links on Sunday.

The 40-year-old scaffolder from Selkirk put together three steady rounds of 72, 75 and 73 over the three days to win the over-25s title with ease.

Runner-up on 228 was Jo Nicolson (Wrexham), winner of the title a couple of years ago.

Last year’s Scottish champion Fiona Lockhart (St Regulus) finished third on 231 with Cara Gruber from Royal Dornoch sharing fourth place on 234 with Australian Bronwyn Lane.

Miss Pow has said she is always more nervous defending a lead rather than when she is behind and trying to make up the leeway. But there was no sign of edginess at all as she started the final round with a six-shot lead.

Martine birdied the second and parred every other hole in reaching the turn in one-under-par 35. Coming home, she bogeyed the 12^th and 17^th for two-over 38.

Runner-up Jo Nicolson had double bogeys at the fifth and the 12^th which rather nullified birdies at the second and 16^th in halves of 38 and 37.
