CAMERON CORBETT VASE

 GLENN CAMPBELL RETAINS TROPHY

IN HAGGS CASTLE 72-HOLE OPEN

Scottish amateur champion Glenn Campbell from Blairgowrie won the Cameron Corbett Vase 72-hole open tournament at Haggs Castle Golf Club, Glasgow on Sunday for the second year in row.

The Murrayshall greenkeeper, who had missed the cut in his last two tournaments before this one, could now be coming back into form just in time to defend the national title at Nairn at the end of the month.

Campbell (68-69)  shared the 36-hole lead with Kevin McAlpine (Alyth), who has played on the American college circuit for Colorado State University for the past four years.

McAlpine had had a moderate start with a 73 but then pulled out a brilliant second-round, eight-under-par 64 to match Glenn’s 137 halfway tally.

Kevin edged ahead with a third-round 68 to Campbell’s 69 but Glenn was the stronger finisher with a 68 for eight-under-par 274. McAlpine signed off with a 70 for 275.

Mark Kerr (Dalmahoy) and Wallace Booth (Comrie) finished joint third on 276. Booth usually has one exceptional round per tournament. In this, it was his fourth-round 65, a score which was matched by Kerr.
