EUROPEAN GIRLS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

KRYSTLE SHINES FOR THIRD-PLACED

SCOTS GIRLS IN DENMARK

Krystle Caithness pulled Scotland through into a satisfactory third place behind Sweden and Spain at the end of the first qualifying round in the European girls’ team championship over a tough Marbaek course at Esbjerg in Denmark today.

The Scots need to finish in the top eight at the end of the second qualifying round to gain a place in the championship match-play flight.

St Regulus club member Krystle recaptured the form that won her the St Rule Trophy with a one-over-par round of 72 on a day when only one player, Sweden’s Camilla Lennarth, scored under par.

Krystle had halves of 38 and 34.

Carly Booth from Comrie returned a 75 with halves of 40 and 35.

Roseanne Niven from Crief also took 40 for the testing outward half and an inward 37 gave her a 77, which was the last counting score – three from four – for Scotland, giving them a team tally of 224, compared with Sweden’s 216 and Spain’s 219.

It was not a good day for 15-year-old Kelsey MacDonald from Nairn. She was going all right when she reached the turn in 39 – second-best in the Scots squad. Then She ran up a quadruple bogey 8 at the ninth, followed quickly by double-bogey 6s at both the 11th and 12th. Another double bogey 5 at the short 17th capped her nightmare second nine which cost her 46 shots for a round of 85.
