ANNE AND KRYSTLE IN TOP TEN BEHIND HAT-TRICK

CHASING TARA DELANEY AT COUNTY SLIGO

 

Tara Delaney, bidding to achieve an historic third win in a row in the Irish women's open amateur stroke-play championship, is tied for the lead with former Irish match-play champion Deirdrie Smith (Co Louth) after 36 holes of the tournament at County Sligo Golf Club.

Carlow Golf Club member Tara, one of the four Irish players in the GB&I team for the Curtis Cup match at the end of the month, had rounds of 77 and 74 for 151 - a total matched by Deirdrie with 75 and 76.

Miss Delaney's second-round 74 in a rising wind was a particularly fine effort when one looks at how everybody else's scores soared in the afternoon.

Three times Scottish champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) and 17-year-old Curtis Cup second reserve Krystle Caithness (St Regulus) are the top Scots in joint seventh place on 157. Anne had an 80 and a 77, Krystle a 79 and a 78.

Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) provided further evidence that she is beginning to return to form with a pair of 79s for 158 and joint 10th position.

The tournament ends with a third round on Sunday.
